David Wexler Seminar and Panel Discussion

Following on from my attendance and participation at the first meeting held by the UK Chapter of Therapeutic Jurisprudence at Milton Keynes University last June 2019, founded by Dr Emma Jones and Dr Anna Kawalek, I was honoured to be invited to be one of the four Guest Speakers accompanying the Keynote Speaker, David B Wexler at the UKTJ Chapter’s very first UK Conference. Lawyers and Authors David B Wexler and the late Bruce Winick are the Founding Fathers of Therapeutic Jurisprudence, born in the mid-1980s. https://intltj.com/event/3727/

Sadly, like so many other events, due to Covid19 this event too was postponed. Notwithstanding, David agreed to deliver his talk in a Zoom Seminar. Myself and others formed part of a discussion panel after his presentation.

The event was covered by Dr Jones and Dr Kawalek’s Seminar Report: Promoting Wellness and Therapeutic Jurisprudence in the UK

“On 16th April 2020 the UK Chapter, in conjunction with the University of Plymouth, were fortunate enough to welcome Professor David Wexler from the University of Puerto Rico to speak at an online seminar on the topic of 'Judging and the Therapeutic Application of the Law'. Professor Wexler spoke about the Therapeutic Jurisprudence mainstreaming project and how this might operate in any jurisdiction (including the UK), the intersectionality between the therapeutic application of the law and design of the law, and the relationship between TJ and criminology, restorative justice and mediation, and psychology. It was a fantastic talk, and we have received feedback reflecting this. Thank you to everyone who attended!

Our thanks also to Penelope Welbourne of the University of Plymouth for her amazing work in organising and chairing the seminar”.

I am very much looking forward to the day we can all meet in person and enjoy the UK’s first TJ Conference!
