Amber Law Team attend Women in Leadership Debate - Viewpoint

15 March 2016

In the week that celebrated International Women’s Day 2016, the Amber Law team attended a thoroughly enjoyable debate organized by EY at the Sunborn on ‘Women in Leadership’. We would like to thank the organizers and also Jonathan Scott who was a very professional anchor. The debate was aired on GBC’s program Viewpoint.

Colleene Wink says: Amber Law looks forward to the day when parity in the workplace (and everywhere for that matter!) is achieved and hopes that more companies adopt working practices which make it possible to achieve a work life balance for all. To allow women to strive to reach, and remain, in top level jobs and not fall by the wayside as a result of having to choose between a family or a career.

Amber Turner says: Michelle Barabich, Head Teacher at Westside Comprehensive School for Girls, mentioned that girls do really well up to obtaining their degree or professional qualification. Angelique Linares of EY mentioned that it appears that the point in time when women ‘fall off a cliff’ is when deciding between having a family or a career or trying to balance both. The bracket of time within which women’s careers are likely to falter is essentially on giving birth, the maternity leave period and the child’s formative years to say nursery/ pre-school. After that period there may be no reason why they cannot return to fulltime employment. The question then is why aren’t more organizations offering (women and men) part time work, flexible working hours (which could mean working fulltime but partially from home) or allowing job sharing? In my opinion, this would greatly assist in both attracting as well as (importantly) retaining women in the workplace and would also allow men the opportunity to be equal partners and to ‘equal parent’ their children.
