The Lawyer As A Human Being

Lawyers As Guardians of Light, Standing by Portals

“As you do anything, is how you do everything” T Harv Eker

1. Do you have the human skills set and professional training to provide your clients with a Holistic approach to their legal problems?

2. Would you like to learn new skills that will ensure you succeed in positively transforming your clients’ lives as well as your own, and your respective families’ lives, throughout and after the legal process?

If you are thinking of becoming a lawyer or are already in practice, you will have so much potential to positively transform your clients’ lives, as well as your own and your respective families’ lives. To do so, you must be prepared to work on yourself so that you can bring ‘you’ as a whole person, with all your gifts and attributes, to your work and in service of resolving your clients’ conflicts and legal problems.

To me lawyers are like guardians of light, standing by portals where clients are walking (some crawling) through. Clients will come to you for guidance, solutions, respite, in the hope of surviving the legal process and finding a light at the end of what can be a very dark and endless tunnel. Many clients will come to you carrying trauma, in crisis and many at their lowest ebb: anxious, desperate, depressed, stressed and even suicidal.

Think of the client whose marriage has just broken down or whose child has been abducted; the client who has been physically abused by his/ her partner but keeps going back; the client who has spent years being the target of a workplace bully; the client who is wrongly accused of sexual assault, or some other criminal activity; the single parent struggling to feed their children; the parent fighting to maintain contact with his/ her children. I have conducted all such types of cases. The list of examples goes on and on. I believe lawyers have the power to not only resolve the clients’ conflict or legal problem, but to gently guide them from a space of conflict to a space of mental clarity from which they are empowered to make better life choices in future.

Most Law Schools though, do not yet prepare lawyers to assist in the resolution of the client ‘Holistically’. That is, to treat our clients as a whole; at a mental, emotional, physical and spiritual level. In my decades of litigation and holistic dispute resolution O can say these are always inextricably linked to either the cause of the conflict/ legal problem or the effect of it.

Lawyers, to many clients, are the infallible doctors who will ‘cure’ their legal problems, with a magic wand. Clients’ legal problems, however, may likely stem from events that occurred years before; personal challenges that root from childhood, they may be locked in co-dependency or addiction, in their family’s inter-generational cycle of negative and damaging behaviour: a question of history ‘repeating itself’. For others, their legal problem may have triggered such challenges in their personal and family lives.

Why not learn the holistic lawyer skills to become more self-aware, empower your clients, improve the lawyer-client relationship which results in more creative and successful case outcomes? Your clients’ experience of you first as a human being and also as legal adviser can mean you build a legacy of justice as healing and attaining peace for literally thousands of adults and children throughout the course of a meaningful legal career.
